title: Will They or Won't They

author: Ava Wilder

publisher: Dell

publication date: June 27, 2023

pages: 384

peppers:  3 (on this scale)

warnings:

  • divorced parents
  • mental illness
  • panic attack
  • drinking/hangovers

summary: Nine years ago, Lilah and Shane got cast together on a television show because of their amazing chemistry. Unable to control said spark at the time, they got together on the down low, but things didn't work out after a year. They stayed together on the show for five years as they progressively became mortal enemies. Now, they haven't seen each other in three years and have been brought back together for the show's final season. The novel alternates between scenes of the present year and ones from the past nine.

tropes:

  • enemies-to-lovers
  • second-chance romance
  • famous people
  • uncontrollable attraction

what I liked:

  • Wilder did a great job showing the sparks between them -- both in anger and in lust
  • Both of the main characters have motivations that make sense
  • I liked the split time line
  • They need to get their own stuff together to be able to be together

what I didn’t like:

  • It does seem that they could have had a serious conversation earlier

overall rating:  4 or 5 (of 5 stars)

WHAT I DO

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
