title: We Met Like This

author: Kasie West

publisher: St. Martin's Press; Saturday Books

publication date: September 16, 2025

pages: 368

peppers: 3 (on this scale)

warnings: name-calling, drunkenness

summary: Margot Hart has been stuck as an assistant and receptionist for a publishing agent for four years while her boss alternates between sleeping with her and telling her that they can talk about a promotion later. Meanwhile, for the past three years since their one horrible date, Margot and Oliver keep matching on the dating app. They banter on the app, joking about how even though they had physical chemistry, they were completely horrible in person. Eventually, they decide that they can use each other to help better navigate the dating apps.

tropes:

  • second-chance romance
  • perfect sister
  • what to do with my life
  • sleeping with the (unavailable) boss
  • fired from my job
  • bad first dates
  • heroine obsessed with romance novels

what I liked:

  • humor
  • banter
  • some unexpected twists
  • publishing industry information
  • she's good at her job

what I didn’t like:

  • maybe she's a little too juvenile
  • ex-boss is too icky

overall rating: 4 (of 5 stars)

WHAT I DO

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
