title: The Prospects

author: KT Hoffman

publisher: Dial Press Trade Paperback

publication date: April 9, 2024

pages: 384

peppers: 2 (on this scale)

warnings: some mentions of transphobia

summary: Gene is a baseball player who's mad that Luis has been traded to his team, but at the same time, Luis is hot and interesting.

tropes: enemies-to-lovers

what I liked: I never found anything I liked about this book, which is a shame because I like the idea of reading a book about a trans professional baseball player.

what I didn’t like:

  • way more baseball information than I wanted.
  • too soap-boxy about trans information
  • no heat between the two characters
  • some head-hopping

overall rating:  (of 5 stars) --> I don't feel comfortable rating this book. I could not make myself finish it; however, somebody who likes baseball more than I do might find it compelling. In theory, I like this book. In fact, I DNF-ed it.

Love this. Happy Thanksgiving, Carita! I applaud you for picking up a book that is out of your comfort zone.
I would certainly also DNF a book on baseball, whose rules I never bothered to learn.

Thanks, Eva. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too! I’m traveling with Hotchkiss kids in Poland and Slovakia. It’s been an amazing trip, which I will take time to process and then write lots of posts about. Thanks for supporting me in my DNF-ing. I used to read all books to the end, but I’ve decided that there are way too many books out there I’ll enjoy to bother with ones I don’t.

WHAT I DO

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
