title: Perverts

author: Mac Crane

publisher: The Dial Press

publication date: July 7, 2026

pages: 256

peppers: 3-4 (on this scale) (lots of interesting things going on here)

warnings:

  • violence against queer people
  • other violence
  • drug use
  • boundary crossings
  • vomit
  • death, cremation
  • blood, guts
  • cheating on spouses/significan others
  • more -- if you need warnings, this probably isn't the book for you

summary: these short stories cover a lot of ground -- people who are paid to allow others to beat them up, people pretending to be AI, people selling their thongs to those with panty kinks, more

tropes:

  • not really a trope book

what I liked:

  • some of the stories were interesting

what I didn’t like:

  • I don't know if it's fair for me to list what I didn't like, as I am clearly not this book's target audience. In fact, I'm not sure why NetGalley sent me this one for the following reasons. (1) I don't generally read/enjoy short stories. (2) I love reading queer literature that doesn't feel like it's trying to soapbox to me about the queer community. (3) I don't generally like whatever genre these are -- very much not romance. For people who like these three, this book is probably great.

overall rating: n/a (of 5 stars) -- for the above-mentioned reasons, I don't feel right giving my star ratings.

As always, you can click on the photo above if you want to buy the book.

WHAT I DO

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
