12. Why I Love Our New Neighbors

Posted on March 27, 2019June 27, 2020 by caritagardiner
neighbor's gift

We're staying at our house in Maine for part of spring break. This is such an exciting development that the preceding sentence doesn't do it justice. Future posts will certainly explain the thrill of being able to say, "We're staying at our house in Maine," but for now, please realize how over-the-moon I am at being able to write that sentence.

So, our house in Maine has only one room and no furniture. Okay, I'm exaggerating. We have a queen-sized mattress and a dog bed. We plan to get furniture, but with not being here much (or at all until now) and not having a lot of money left after the building of said house in Maine, we don't have any furniture yet.

Still, since we arrived here I've been posting photos every day of various aspects of the house, the place, my love for Maine. One of the women who lives on the street is a FaceBook friend, though I hadn't met her until she saw my posts and sent a message. I invited her to come see the place -- I'm very proud of how it came out -- even though I told her that we couldn't offer her a place to sit down.

She showed up with the best gift bag I've ever seen -- a bottle of wine, a bottle of sparkling water, bagel chips, boursin cheese, olives and feta, raspberries, dog treats, a sparkly bag (because I may have posted once or twice about my love for sparkly things), little plates, little cocktail spears (for the olives), napkins, and paper bowls serving things. Wow!

Did I mention that we'd never met her before?

After showing up with that gift bag, she could have been a jerk and I might have liked her anyway, but she wasn't. In addition to being super generous, she was so nice and funny. We had a great time talking with her, standing up around the kitchen island.

Our other neighbors sent a text today saying that they would love to get the dogs together to romp in the snow and that they have plenty of tools if we ever need to borrow any.

And yet another neighbor just came over to say hello and to let us know that she's around if we ever need anything.

I'm eager to get some furniture in this house for a few reasons, but one of the main ones is so that I can invite my new neighbors over to sit down and stay a while.

What neighborly things have you done or had done for you? I'd love to hear about them in the comments.

Now that I’ve met Kim and her mom Nancy, I truly appreciate how awesome they are! Best neighbors ever.

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
