summary: Cubby's cheating, unkind ex Connor has left their band, gotten huge as a solo artist, and debuted both songs that Cubby wrote and songs that disparage Cubby as a lover and girlfriend. Meanwhile, when their producer finds out about the social media hubbub in response to Cubby's band, now called Tea Time Tantrum, is getting, she pushes them into a tour and pushes Cubby into a fake relationship with pianist Harry. Disappointingly, Cubby feels only platonic love for Harry but can't stop fantasizing about her best friend, bassist Darcy.
tropes:
- friends to lovers
- mean, jilted ex
- social media controls us
- fake dating (but not the main couple)
- band shenanigans
- only one bed, sort of
what I liked:
- everything with the band was super fun.
- good representation of different sexual identities, mental illness, and neurodiversity
what I didn’t like:
- for most of the book, I didn't like Cubby-- which is problematic, as part of the point of the book is that people are judging her based on wrong/unfair information, but she was immature
- she's got a problem with social media, and unlike most addicts, she can name exactly what's going on with her use. She seems too self-aware in some ways and not self-aware enough in others.
- similarly, as she explores her sexuality, she gets on a soapbox to talk about it. She seems oddly knowledgeable about the world and ignorant about herself.
