title: Last Bite

author: Amy S. Peele

publisher: She Write Press

publication date: February 24, 2026

pages: 256

peppers: 2 (on this scale)

warnings: death, food-poisining, mentions of vomit, violence, gun shots, hospital, surgery, mention of cancer, pot-smoking

summary: At her husband's funeral, Angie discovers two things: that people are getting lucky in the bathroom, and that her husband has left her penniless. Worse, her niece who wants to start a catering business, has prepared the food, which everyone is spitting out. Her life is a mess.

tropes:

  • second chance at life
  • watch out for the mob
  • do anything for family
  • take care of my widow
  • husband left her nothing
  • finding one's own strength

what I liked:

  • scenes of Chicago
  • cameos by Bill Murray
  • food scenes
  • niece Gina and her friend Kim
  • stoner roommates, Thad and Daisy

what I didn’t like:

  • the writing quality
  • too unbelievable

overall rating: 2 (of 5 stars)

WHAT I DO

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
