63. Why Puns

doughnut math

This poster hangs in the math wing of the main classroom building at my school. Donut you love it?

I teach English for a living and write for fun, so it will probably come as no surprise to you that I love words, but I particularly love plays on words. Puns combine two of my favorite things: words and humor. I believe humor can help us recover from what ails us, both emotional and physical (except maybe belly stitches -- then laughing hurts). For example, the day before I had major surgery four years ago, I texted the family group chat that I had dreamt about Swedish Fish. (I love candy, particularly gummy stuff, but that's a story for a different post.) The next afternoon, when I emerged from my surgical stupor, there were almost a hundred messages on my phone, most of them with fish puns that made me smile (not laugh, see belly stitches parenthetical above). Moreover, I know my family members were afraid, but they could keep their own minds occupied by fishy puns rather than in thinking about my tumor removal. The puns were a win-win.

Here's a great opportunity to share some of your favorite puns. Can  you make my loyal readers (both of them) laugh out loud? Share any G-rated puns you want in the comments. And have a sweet (that's connected to the doughnut pun above) day!

WHAT I DO

I serve as a class dean and teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while deaning, teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
