title: Georgie All Along

author: Kate Clayborn

publisher: Kensington

publication date: January 24, 2023

pages: 335

peppers: 2

warnings: vomit, birth

summary: Georgie heads home to her small town after losing her job as a personal assistant to a Hollywood powerhouse. She has no idea what to do with her life except that she wants to help her childhood best friend in the weeks leading up to and following the birth of her first child. Staying in her parents' home while they're away, she's surprised when a familiar-looking man keys into the house with his massive dog. Levi doesn't want to cause any problems with anyone, as that part of his life is behind him, but because his house is a mess of renovations and repairs and his dog needs a place to stay, he shares with the messy daughter of the friends who promised him a landing pad.

tropes:

  • grumpy-sunshine
  • big dog
  • moving back home
  • childhood best friends
  • enacting childhood dreams
  • figuring out a blank future
  • black sheep of the family
  • small town
  • one house

what I liked:

  • both main characters are thoughtfully developed; their issues make sense
  • good supporting characters
  • slow burn

what I didn’t like:

  • nothing

overall rating: 5 (of 5 stars)

Georgie All Along sounds like an interesting book. The many threads you describe drew me in.

I’m curious about the warnings. Is there a set list of subjects that might elicit distress, or are those items chosen on a case-by-case basis? I could imagine, for instance, “eating dessert” listed as a warning, but only if it were a description of Ron DeSantis eating chocolate pudding.

Yes, this one was fun to read.
You’re right, watching Ron DeSantis eating pudding might give me nightmares. There isn’t a set list of warnings that I know about, but lots of people don’t like reading about bodily processes, cruelty, violence, etc. Since I’ve started doing this, I’m surprised how many romance novels include vomit, which I know many people don’t want to read about.

WHAT I DO

I teach English to high schoolers at a boarding school in Connecticut. I read AP English Literature and Composition exams and serve as a teacher mentor for the University of Pennsylvania Teaching Fellows program. I’ve earned a Bachelor of Arts (Amherst College), an Education Master in Learning and Teaching (Harvard University Graduate School of Education), a Master of Arts in English (Bread Loaf School of English), and most recently a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with a certificate in the online teaching of writing (Southern New Hampshire University).

As a writer, I hope to capture the complexity and joy of life in the New England boarding school world. On this site, I share what I know about trying to write fiction while teaching English, coaching, and doing the other tasks associated with helping to raise over six hundred other people’s children.
